L-色氨酸（L-Trp）是哺乳动物细胞蛋白质合成所必需的必需氨基酸，L-Trp到犬尿氨酸（Kyn）途径已被确立为先天和适应性免疫的关键调节因子。L-Trp到Kyn的分解代谢通过饥饿L-Trp的免疫细胞并释放具有免疫抑制功能的L-Trp降解产物来维持免疫抑制微环境。吲哚胺2,3-双加氧酶（IDO1和IDO2）是该途径中的两种限速酶，在许多肿瘤中上调，为癌细胞提供了逃避免疫的途径。
