EPH受体A4（EPHA4）属于蛋白酪氨酸激酶的红细胞生成素产生肝细胞受体（Eph）亚家族，这类激酶参与介导多种发育过程，尤其是神经系统的发育过程。EPHA4的配体红细胞生成素产生肝细胞配体A3（ephrin-A3）定位于包裹树突棘的星形细胞突起中。ephrin-A3对EPHA4的激活会引发脊髓回缩，降低树突棘密度，并抑制异常的树突棘形态与结构相互作用。EPHA4基因敲除小鼠的皮质脊髓束和前联合存在缺陷，这表明存在这样一种机制：轴突上的ephrin配体能够感知皮质脊髓束周围脊髓细胞上的EPHA4。
